Arthur Blake was born 1893 in Jacksonville, Florida and was a blues singer and guitarist.  He is known as "The King of Ragtime Guitar".  When asked him name, he often gave it as Blind Arthur Blake, although some believe his real name to be Arthur Phelps.

Blake recorded about 80 tracks with Paramount records and his records sold very well.  He has inspired a number of guitarist such as Ry Cooder and Ralph McTell and is best know for his distinct guitar sound which has been compared to ragtime piano.

Early Morning Blues was his first sold recording and this is considered an excellent example of his ragtime based guitar style.  In 1932 he made his final recordings and his career effectively came to an end when Paramount went bankrupt.

Blind Blake died an early death at the age of 40, although little is known about this, it may have been caused by his heavy drinking or some have suggested his was killed by a car.
